jaune quick to see smith makes work that connects art history to native roots. she dismantles the frame which traditional art history is viewed through and inserts the native back into the narrative. by using a map that has arbitrary lines on it, lines that define our modern history, in juxtaposition with the title of a famous gauguin painting she is reminding us that america itself does not know its own history. a history which has been erased and whitewashed. i am unerasing that narrative and much like this piece, I am to reinsert the native back into the story, back into the history of our country, with my work.

cannupa hanska luger has been at the frontlines of modern native art for a long time, more so he has been at the front lines of activism. this work was used at the standing rock protests, by holding up shields that doubled as mirrors against the attempts to stop the protests, luger was reflecting back the violent actions performed against protesters. more so, he was showing the people trying to stop the protests exactly who they were. he created a split moment of contemplation in this work. my moments of contemplation are longer, i have that luxury as my work exists in a gallery and not on the front lines of a war for water. but it is the same contemplation, i am pleading with my viewer to look inward and view the intergenerational trauma that has been faced, to look at the history that could have been, to look at the future that could be. i am asking my viewer to start to consider making a change in their view, and those changes will eventually create a shift in the narrative of what nativeness is.

jenny holzer makes truisms, they started as paper and now they're projections. they're simple statements that state facts. while i do not directly engage with truisms yet, i engage with the idea of a truism. i am stating facts that are simple:
my culture was erased by force.
My land was stolen by force.
Genocide is real.
Native people are being held as political prisoners. 
native women are going missing and being murdered.
Mni wiconi (Water is Life)
Native people are still here.
Native people matter.
